My
Teaching
Philosophy
My teaching philosophy centers around the belief that art is a tool for discovery. Through engaging deeply with the world around us, we uncover new ways of understanding both ourselves and our place within our communities. I see the art classroom as a space for exploration, curiosity, and critical thinking. I aim to create the classroom into a space where students learn not only to make but to question, reflect, and grow.
I encourage students to step beyond the boundaries of the classroom whenever possible, using unconventional materials, processes, and environments to inspire their creativity. Whether this means creating a more fluid and collaborative classroom layout or exploring outdoor and community-based settings, these experiences foster hands-on learning and help students form a more personal and meaningful connection to their artistic practice.
Art education naturally accommodates a wide variety of learning styles and approaches, from the analytical to the intuitive, the visual to the tactile, and the collaborative to the independent. I strive to design lessons that value experimentation, critical dialogue, and reflective practice allowing each student to find their own path into creative expression.
At heart, I believe that art can nurture both creativity and empathy, encouraging students to see complex ideas not as barriers, but as a rich environment for interrogation and growth. My aim is to cultivate a classroom culture where students feel confident taking creative risks, thinking critically about their world, and developing a lifelong curiosity toward learning and making.
